Distillery Exhibit
Spring 2017
Objective: To design an exhibit for Old Fourth Ward Distillery to host an event at Summerour Studio to launch their new bourbon.
Our goal was to create an experience for this event that represented Old Fourth Distellery's brand.
Team: Allie Haydon, Carmen Rae Torrey, Adah Griessbach, Juan Piana
Courtyard Entry
The courtyard introduces the user to Old Fourth Ward's products, and gives them a glimpse of what they are about to experience. Copper piping begins in the courtyard and continues throughout the event space.
Barrel Entry
After the user enters through a courtyard, they then continue through what feels like the inside of a barrel. This allows the user to learn about Old Fourth Ward and become educated on bourbon tasting and flavor pairing.
Main Event Space
The exhibit takes place in Summerour Studio in Atlanta, Georgia. The main event space allows people to enjoy tasting the new bourbon while watching the band perform. Copper piping continues throughout the ceiling to guide the user through the space.
Floating Bars
There are circular bars throughout the space that each showcase the new bourbon in classic cocktails. These circular bars give the illusion of floating to keep the mood light hearted and fun.
Current Products
This section of the event space allows users to taste the current Old Fourth Ward products or purchase merchandise.
Old Fourth Ward Logo
The back wall of the space contains a wall in the shape of the Old Fourth Ward logo. This wall promotes Old Fourth Ward and provides a great place for photos.
The Process
Research
In our research we visited Old Fourth Ward Distillery to meet with our client and visited the Summerour Studio venue where our exhibit would take place.
Old Fourth Ward Current Products
As part of our research, we learned more about Old Fourth Ward's current products in order to better understand the brand. Old Fourth Ward has three products including a hand-crafted gin, a hand crafted vodka, and Lawn Dart.
Intended Customer
Our intended customer is someone who has a knowledge of craft spirits or whiskey & bourbon.
Exhibit Venue - Summerour Studio
The venue for our event is Summerour Studio, a large space with wooden floors and a rustic feel.
Brand Language
The brand language we wanted to capture includes a rustic and antique feel, wood, raw materials, and textures.
Initial Ideation
Our initial ideation included brainstorming different installations to display the new bourbon throughout the space. We explored layout of the space and placement of the bars. From our initial ideation, we developed three initial concepts that each focused on a different main material throughout the space.
Concept 1
Concept 1 focuses on the copper material that is seen throughout the distillery. In this concept, copper pipes would act as a way finder throughout the venue and as a back drop for the bars.
Concept 2
Concept 2 focuses on using the wood and shape of a barrel throughout the space. The entry would have the feeling of walking through the inside of a barrel.
Concept 3
Concept 3 focuses on glass as the main material to represent a glass of bourbon. This concept gives the feeling that the bars and signage are floating. This concept also has swings throughout to add to the light feel.
Further Ideation
After receiving feedback from the three initial concepts, we did further ideation to brainstorm ways to combine the best features from each concept.
Final Design
Our final design uses the copper piping along the ceiling as a way to guide the customers through the space. The customer enters through what feels like the inside of a barrel. The copper piping connects from the courtyard, to each of the bars, to the stage, and to the Old Fourth Ward Logo.
Final Exhibit
This design provides an experience where customers get to learn about Old Fourth Ward, try different cocktails with the new bourbon, and enjoy live music.
